So, you’re ready to make a change
We’ve all been at that point: maybe your clothes are uncomfortable, perhaps you’re feeling self-conscious, maybe you have a holiday or special occasion coming up, or possibly your health is beginning to suffer….whatever the reason, you’re ready to make some changes to your diet and lifestyle.
It can feel pretty urgent once you’ve decided to lose weight– when you’re sick and tired of feeling a certain way you just want to sort it out quickly!
But have you stopped to ponder what it is your body actually needs? Because the key to looking and feeling your best - and staying that way- is to give your body the right balance of nutrients, and the right balance of calories. And that’s what the Herbalife Nutrition Philosophy is all about.
What your body needs
Think of your body as a machine – like a machine, how well your body runs will depend on the quality of the fuel you put in it.
First of all, your body needs protein. This macro nutrient is essential to virtually every cell in the body, as well as being great at satisfying hunger. It supports muscle growth and maintenance, and is really important in the production of hormones and enzymes. You need to eat protein every day as your body uses it all the time, in fact the Herbalife Nutrition Philosophy suggests that up to 30% of your daily calories should come from protein.

Next your body needs carbohydrates. Another macronutrient, carbohydrates are used as fuel (energy) and it’s important to eat enough for daily activities – up to 40% of your daily calorie intake.

Fat is the next macronutrient on the list – a small amount of healthy fats is essential for normal bodily function. No more that 30% of your daily calories should come from healthy fats but be aware that fats are a very concentrated source of calories, so portion sizes should be kept small!

Fibre is another key part of a healthy diet and people often fall well short of the recommended daily intake of 25g. Fibre is great at filling you up, but more importantly it supports digestion and promotes the growth of healthy bacteria in your digestive tract.

Next, Water! Given that our bodies are 70% water it’s no wonder that staying hydrated is crucial. Water helps control your body temperature, it transports nutrients to cells and keeps joints lubricated. It’s also needed to get rid of waste. The general recommendation is to drink at least 2litres of water a day.

Of course, we also need vitamins and minerals, which play important roles in the chemical reactions your body performs daily, and some minerals also play a structural role (e.g. calcium and magnesium). A healthy balanced diet helps to provide the vitamins and minerals needed, but it’s a good idea to add a multivitamin to your daily intake to ensure you’re getting everything you need.

Finally, we need phytonutrients, which give fruit and vegetables their colour and which boost our immune system as well as reducing oxidative stress. The Herbalife Nutrition Philosophy recommends eating a variety of colourful fruits and vegetables daily, to ensure we get the various beneficial plant compounds that our bodies need.
So you see, there are a variety of things to consider and structure into your healthy meal plan. Remember, this is about feeling your very best and there’s no doubt that when you start fuelling the body with what it needs you quickly start to feel better in terms of your energy and vitality.
Let’s talk calories
Put simply, we consume calories every day in the form of food and drink. We also burn calories through our body functions and daily activities. If the calories we consume is equal to the calories we burn, our weight will stay the same.
It stands to reason therefore, that if we are eating more calories than we’re burning our weight will increase, and conversely if we create a calorie deficit, i.e. consume fewer calories than we’re burning, then our weight will start to decrease.
Losing weight with Herbalife Nutrition
To look and feel great we need to meet our body’s nutritional needs, while also balancing our calories to meet our goals.
So how does Herbalife help?
Simple – by creating scientifically formulated meal replacement shakes and supplements that are nutritionally dense (i.e. packed with good nutrition) while being lower calorie and low GI (Glycaemic Index).

For example, Herbalife’s Formula 1 Meal Replacement shake has the following key benefits:
- High in protein
- Gluten free
- Vegan sourced ingredients
- No artificial colours
- Natural flavourings
- 25 vitamins and minerals
- Around 220 calories per serving (depending on the milk used to blend it)
If you were going to try to create a meal that contained all the goodness in a Herbalife shake, you’d end up eating a lot more that 220calories, that’s for sure!
So, how does Herbalife fit into your daily nutrition?
We recommend following a 5 meals-a-day eating plan. And it all starts with getting breakfast right, because how we start the day sets up our eating habits for the rest of the day.
The charts below give an idea of what happens to your blood sugar in three different breakfast scenarios.
Imagine waking up in the morning – you haven’t eaten for several hours and overnight your body has been working hard to generate and repair cells using the nutrients you consumed the day before. You are therefore depleted.
What happens next for you?
Many people skip breakfast altogether. This lack of fuel first thing causes a dip in blood sugar; hunger; low energy and sugar cravings. This leads to making a sugary, calorific food choice, which in turn causes blood sugar to spike. This prompts the production of insulin to bring blood sugar levels back down…and so the cycle begins again, with hunger, cravings, unbalanced food choices and, no doubt, a day of big energy dips.
Skipping Breakfast
Alternatively, many choose a carbs-based breakfast, such as toast or cereal. While this is preferable to no breakfast at all, a breakfast of sugary cereals or white bread/toast (simple carbohydrates) will cause a surge in blood sugar and kick off the cycle of insulin, blood sugar crashes and cravings all over again. Sound familiar?
Carbohydrate Based Breakfast
The final scenario is that of a balanced protein-based breakfast, such a Herbalife Formula 1 shake. By consuming a shake within 30minutes of waking we are replenishing our body with a good blast of balanced nutrition, avoiding getting too hungry and keeping our blood sugar steady(remember that the shake is low GI).
Protein Based Breakfast
The key then is to keep topping up throughout the day with balanced nutrition to make sure that blood sugars don’t dip too far, and that hunger is kept in check.
By keeping blood sugar levels within the normal range, sugar cravings are avoided. In addition the combination of protein and complex carbohydrates in the shake are the best option for hunger control:
